IIRC, they already announced the release date for Vista SP1 -- September, I think? I wouldn't upgrade until at least then.
Heh. I was just wondering about this. The most recent copy of XP that I bought came with an "Upgrade to Vista" redemption coupon. I'm going to send it in over the next couple of days, so I have it, but I think I will not be upgrading to Vista for a very long time. If for no other reason than I just bought a bunch of computer games, and I can't be certain they'll run under Vista, so.... Yeah. It will be a while, though I want the copy just to have it.
One of the best recs I've heard re: Vista is to download and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor -- it will tell you which of your programs have Vista drivers available and which don't.
I wonder how long you'll be able to buy computers with XP. I need to get Leif a new computer, but I don't want Vista. The whole point of his computer is to play edutainment games that mostly come from bargin bins and I fear that many of them won't run on Vista.
Alas, if only wine would run more of them.

I see $8.00 webcams at Target all the time - maybe lower. Never noticed the resolution. What is the normal resolution for low end web cams?

320x240 for USB 2 -- the specs are hazy on all the sites I looked at, but I'd bet that either the full resolution is only available for still pics (several sites list it as a "web cam + VGA digicam" or the like), or the frame rate is abysmally slow.
The second cheapest camera said it did interpolated 640x480, but that cheapest one didn't mention interpolation.
My iSight is 640x480, but it does a bunch of other stuff I'm assuming you can't get for $5.99. Yet.
This will make shopping interesting.
I found a really reasonably priced Toshiba notebook over at Amazon, but I have a few qualms about it. It's refurbished (not an issue for me), and the company that is selling it through Amazon's Marketplace has a relatively complete seller's profile with over 1000 recent feedbacks and a customer service line. Problem is that the website link goes to a site that seems to have only one computer in stock (the one I'm interested in), and the customer service line is "currently unavailable," with the message saying to send e-mail with any tech support questions. This is lighting up "company might be folding tomorrow!!" lights in my head.
Should I go for it, or look for something potentially more reliable?
