If there is another computer with an optical drive in the area, you can use it as the optical drive for the MacBook Air.
But you have to be able to install software on that computer, which makes it less handy.

I just think it's interesting that they didn't. Are they relying on their audience being either geeky enough to want solid state despite smaller HD, or ungeeky enough to never notice that the HD is smaller in their second canned config?

Hmm. I'm not sure a laptop without a DVD drive would be useful to me, the more I think about it.
But the new Apple TVs are still pretty tempting at $229.
And looking forward to my new iPod Touch apps, assuming they're going to upgrade the current models & not just ship w/ the new ones.

I'm not sure I can remember when I last used my DVD drive on my computer. I think I use the internet/thumb drive for most data transfer.

Aaaand my google maps just pinpointed my location almost exactly. When I tried the pinpoint thing, it sure as heck pulled up my block. Then, when I switched over to hybrid view, and zoomed in three times (with just a double tap), the crosshairs are pretty much centered on the building next door to me.

Never mind. Some experimentation reveals that the zoom is not that specific, and neither are the crosshairs.
Although, WOW! I'm displaying current freeway traffic conditions on my Google maps right now, AIFG!
