I HATE mkv files - 1) they usually are of poorer video/sound quality than avi and 2) they are ALWAYS bigger. Goodness.
But... But... They're open source! ;)

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

Julie,
I don't think you need to change the filename. If it is mkv, that's what extension should remain.
I don't know jack about converting mkv files. I've only worked with avi.
okay, another tact: if I dl'd the torrent from one particular site, would other sites possibly have different torrents, and therefore different, non MKV file formats? (don't know if I'm using the terms correctly)
It's certainly possible, especially if the show in question is at all popular.
I used mininova, and piratebay, what other sites are recommended?
Those are the two main sites I use. Another thing you can try is a place like isohunt, which is a search engine for torrent sites.
okay, I didn't know if there were some that were better than others. Found some with Swedish subtitles at pirate bay, argh!
Is it my imagination, or is it substantially harder to compare laptops than it is for desktops? Or is it just that my husband did the brunt of the research when we bought a desktop?
AMD Athlon dual-core vs. AMD Turion dual-core. Is the only difference that the Turion is newer?
Am I correct that it's better to get more memory (say, 2GB) than a better processor (say, AMD vs. Intel), all things being equal?
oh, bless you, le nubian! I had dug a little more into videohelp and kept finding the need for a minimum of three pieces of software I don't already own. I had given up on the converting and been hunting down other torrents instead.
Thanks!
