So... Google Desktop? What will it do for me that I can't do already in Mac OS X?
Not that much (I think). The coolest thing about Google Desktop is it can search your whole computer, but if you have a recent version of OS X you already have Spotlight.
Plus Vista has a search thing too, right?

A coworker is always gushing about the new things he is finding in Vista.
He knows I'm a Mac guy and the other day he was gushing away about the new Vista search and then turned to me.
"I suppose Mac users had that already."
Not wanting to start up the war again, I hesitated. "Well, Um..."
He looks at me, and said "Fucking Macs."
My laugh at his delivery echoed in the office.

I built my old website on ipowerweb and decided to move to dreamhost because I fancied that I didn't like the control panel and wanted something easier. What was I thinking?
On dreamhost, I can't even find the control panel and pretty much everything I've read in terms of help (on the wiki and otherwise) is greek to me.
Is there some additional tool I need? I have constructed all my past files with raw html and then just cut and paste to change copy. I have no problem doing that again...I don't need a fancy editor. I've gotten the first two pages up but I've got waaay too much to do to be wandering around the dreamhost site like an idiot.

Every time I go to that page, I get something about cron jobs and I'm immediately defeated. I have no clue what that even is!

when you get to the panel, on the left side is "manage domains", you should see an FTP option underneath your domain in the main window.
Thanks le nubian. I flopped around and found a different way into the ftp, but yours is much easier.
I just don't like the drill down...but I guess what is really going on is that I feel far less capable of doing a good job with this website conversion than I will need to be for it to be successful. Not enough knowledge, too few tools and too little cash to get someone else to do it.
The frustration comes straight out of having spent weeks coding my last site (many 12-15 hour days) and then having it not be as fruitful as I wanted it to be.
Ick. I don't like remembering that feeling...or being less capable than I want to be. Not dreamhost's fault to be sure. I just wish it were a little more obvious...and easier than ipowerweb, which it is not turning out to be.

My computer died. I have a new one. The hard drive is... still here... somehow. But I want to get the files off of it pronto. The files I most want back are locked. The computer keeps telling me that I can't change the security/permissions. It won't let me copy them to the new computer. It won't let me open them with the appropriate program so I can re-save them.
Was Windows XP, now it's Windows Vista, I'm completely stumped. Anyone have any ideas?
