SJ - I was a bit wordy, but wanted to get all my thoughts across. Laura is much more to the point then I.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
No, you were fine. I just have no idea about any of it. Just wanted to say, hi! And also you and Laura should come visit.
I've been installing a Frontpoint alarm system today with a doorbell camera and two exterior cameras. So far so good on the alarm front.
NoiseDesign - Does Frontpoint have a monthly subscription fee. On the Web Site they had it at 44.99 per month. Is this required.
Yeah. The $10 a month for premium service is probably the number one problem Iris has, but as long as Samsung is content to let SmartThings bleed money there's only so much that can be done. Next year when we add professional monitoring for security/smoke/co2 etc... then the price equation may even out some. There's also a lot of work figuring out how customers use the service (which is a lot of what I do right now) to maybe make adjustments in the future. There are also some changes we could make to lower the stress on cloud servers which would lower the costs. Actually, there is an endless list of improvements we want to make and it's aways a contest to set priorities.
I started working on Iris (v2) about 25 months ago. When I joined we had about four engineers and zero lines of code.
Gudanov - Iris is a complete package, end to end. Impressive you went from Zero Lines of Code with 4 engineers, but typical. That said, I believe you had more then 4 engineers, when you consider each device manufacture also has there engineers.
I believe you have excellent end solution for consumer. Only issue I see is marriage to big box retailer. I understand you will be most likely opening up devices via Zigbee, however, this is a Pandora's box.
Right now you are like Apple, have control over end to end product. Once you go to third party device support you lose some of that control.
Sounds a lot like Apple vs PC argument, it is because that is what it is. IJS.

I believe that you do have a pay at least a minimum monitoring fee. That's because this is a core alarm system which has home automation as part of what it can do. The monitoring is for all of the alarm functions.
Didn't mean to sound defensive. Just saying it's still a work in progress. We're working on on-boarding more devices and to work out deals with other vendors. It's not really that the platform is closed off, but we can only claim support on devices we have specific drivers for and are tested. Generic drivers don't tend to work real well because, well, these devices are designed to be as low cost and low power as possible which results in almost all of them having their own quirks.
Noisedesign, Agreed, you have items that need protection, looks like a great solution, great peace of mind.
I am looking to simply offer a security solution as part of the sale of the house.
Great choice, tell me how well it works as it is a possibility moving forward for me in my next home/office or both.
