The other technology item on my shopping list is a replacement printer. I can't deal with inkjet anymore. I never use up cartridges, instead I let them dry out. So I'm looking for a so-ho colour laser printer, wi fi preferable, but definitely on the network, that's not huge, since it will live in the living room.

I've had Brother recommended enthusiastically, which led me to this which looks like a steal at $160. It does have limited paper handling capabilities (I'd love to be able to print on heavy paper--it'll be printing art as much as anything else, but it looks like I have to go up to $290 amongst Brothers.

The HP colour laser at the same (original) price point had significantly less functionality. Are they coasting on rep, or is their print quality that much worth the money?

I find HP to be overpriced in general.

I'm in the same boat. I've run out of inkjet cartridges, and am contemplating just buying a new printer instead. My current HP multifunction no longer duplexes, faxes, scans other than webscan, or form feeds. So. Kinda not that multi of available functions. I mean, it prints. It copies. I guess that's two. It's a difunction.

Man, I should get off my ass and buy that $160 printer before it's out of stock. Do they typically come with toner, or should I be getting that at the same time? I could just have the delivery shipped to my nearest store and I can sort that out on the spot.

I'm really pissed at myself, because I had a great deal lined up with a DSLR, two lenses, and a nice Canon printer, for basically the price of the printer. But I second-guessed it and put it off. But then the money for it came in, and I should have taken the deal, because now there's nothing comparable. And I'm going to end up spending twice as much buying the printer and buying the camera.

I wonder if I don't really need a multifunction anymore. I have the NeatDesk (which I don't really use because it came right before camp last year and I never really established a workflow with it and then Evernote partnered with Fujitsu ScanSnap instead and I got all pissy, but honestly, it's an expensive piece of equipment so I really should get after using it) so I could just scan to copy and fax over the internet. It's not like I have a reliable phone connection in this house anyway.

Maybe I should just be looking for a high quality wide format photo printer instead.

I dunno. Probably still inkjet, so long as there are multiple cartridges for the colors.

I ended up deciding I can get photos printed at Walgreens, etc. Because the colour toner expiry is just too expensive to continue with. Also, having slopped a bit of liquid on both types of printouts, well...

Once I outsource photos, there's nothing keeping me with inkjet, especially at the prices laser has come down to. Toner is expensive, but I can use it at my own pace.

Fair. But I'll still get that at the store because of my weird work discount thing. It doesn't work at staples.com, and I want every chance at saving I can get.

I was also mandatory single function. I have a good quality scanner, don't fax enough to invest in infrastructure, and rarely copy. But I'm not outfitting a business.

Ok, I found a two tray version of that one direct from Epson refurb for $179. I think that's a no brainer since I was getting ready to spend 80 bucks on ink alone.

(And contrary to my own advice, it apparently ships with full hi-capacity ink cartridges, so I won't buy extra ink. I guess you should check the specs of yours.)
