I'm confused - she needs to mount it four feet off the ground without a tripod? Or is the problem simply that there's not a tripod available for the Toshiba Thrive?

I am not aware of full size tripods with mounts that accommodate tablets (or tablets that are threaded for tripods--the Thrive definitely isn't), but if they do exist, they might solve her problem.

The Padcaster looks brilliant, but it does also look very iPad form-fitting. Maybe the Android market has prompted a more generic alternative, with adjustable clamping.

I don't get why she can't use a phone? Maybe with a gorilla pod thing clamping it to a chair or whatever?

My iPad 2 is a refurb. They come with the same warranty and are usually just fine. I have the data but have never turned it on--because I used to have a hotspot through work. Not I'm tempted, except the I think if I'm payin extra I should just get a hotspot and use it for phone/iPad/laptop, when traveling.

I think you might be forgetting where my sister lives. "A phone" to a Jamaican isn't really the same sort of solution you might be thinking of. She has an old Blackberry that's been repaired multiple times, and an early iPod Touch whose screen longer really senses touch, due to the web of cracks through it.

Even so, recording hour, half-hour sessions of patient information with a gorilla pod that she'd be shopping for right now like she's shopping for a mount or dedicated camera would have to go on a chair she can't work into the room's layout.

Anyone have a recommendation for a scanner? Primary purpose right now is for photos, but I'd like one that can kind of handle everything.

I don't know what 2013 has brought the line, but my Epson V600 Photo is markedly better than either of my previous scanners at handling colour balance and pencil drawings. It also scans slides and negatives. The scanner software is a bit--obstinate, but it's nothing major.
