omnis, pursue. That's an order from a shy woman who can use M-16. - Shir

Genius bar can help with that. They can connect via external drive they have to see if it's a computer thing, or the boot drive thing.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

You can run the disk utility from the OS install disk.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

How old a version of the OX X install disk can I us? It is (was) running Mountain Lion but I think I'd have to go back two or three versions to find an actual install disk.

How new is your Mac? This might work.

Wow, that's cool.

Sadly, I'm not getting a command prompt. (Looks like it's dying right after it detects the boot device.)

eta: OK, now I got a bunch of disk errors too.

Summer '09.

Sounds like internet booting is not an option, as the MacBook Pro predates Lion.

Weird. I can't get my MacBook Pro to boot from a Snow Leopard intall DVD nor from a USB drive.

I tried booting from the DVD while holding down the 'c' key and tried booting from a USB drive by holding down the 'd' key.

eta: Tried booting into single user mode so I could use the command line to mount the DVD. But I don't get a command prompt, even after the attempt to mount the HD times out.

If Apple's webpage won't let me make an appointment for the Genius Bar tonight, would it pay to go to the store anyway? I wouldn't get there until 8:00 and they close at 9:00.

Tommy,

Only do it if you are prepared for them to send your computer away for a week.
