What version of firmware is your NAS on, ND? I can see BA_Backup, but when I select it, that's the error I get.

ita, silly question with your backup problems... Not 100% familiar with the set up, as I don't have one, but, the NAS is connected via cable to the airport?? Could you have a bad cable??? Hey, sometimes it's the simple things.

The NAS is connected to a router, omnis. And I can copy files to and from it just fine. I just can't:
- use Time Machine
- resolve symbolic links in a Photoshop Elements save dialog (they resolve fine in a PSE open dialog, and all the other apps I've tried so far)
I can certainly try swapping cables, but that would be some of the weirdest ethernet behaviour I've ever seen.
Of course, ND having the same version of OS and firmware as mine isn't really comforting. Hmm. What are the other variables? Must ponder.

The rest of the details of my network shouldn't impact it, but I have an Airport extreme connected to my Cable modem which covers the front house. This has a GigE tieline back to a 24 port Gigabit switch. The NAS is connected to this switch, along with a second airport extreme that is covering the office in the 5 GHz range. There is another GigE tieline from that switch to a 8 port Gigabit switch, where the third Airport Extreme is generating a 2.4 GHz network. The Airport in the front house is one of the newer models that can generate both 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time.
There are also two Airport Expresses on the network that are used as wireless bridges for connecting printers and the home theatre setup in out bedroom.
The MacBook Airs only ever connect wirelessly, and they can connect to the NAS from any of the wireless network nodes.

Well, it's not that it's not authenticating--I get as far as entering credentials (I'm trying it wired only right now, no diff), and if I put in an invalid password it shimmies at me.
Huh. I fired up the old Mac, and it can't connect to it anymore either. Great.
Well, hey! At least I am troubleshooting a different problem now.

So I'm back to the beginning on that one, but at least my website problem has totally cleared up. Although they insisted that the server move would have no such effect, the IP address in the error message was the old server, so something was being cached somewhere. But it's all caught up to reality now, and the page works just fine.
Didn't change anything, my ass. Not their job to troubleshoot, my buttocks.
As for Time Machine--I've disabled it on the NAS, re-enabled it, cleaned it up (bye bye backups...), but I still can't connect with either machine, even with a new ID.
So I'll need to talk to a Seagate support person. Blargh.
