Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

I have a hearts-and-flowers kind of crush on Sublime Text 2 [link] -- it's not free, but it's sorta like free, in that there are no limitations (including time limits) on the trial version; I used it for months until I decided I just gosh-darn like it so much I wanted to pay.

All 3 platforms, one license for all your machines, tons of searching power, nice code highlighting/folding/completion, add-ons (nearly all actually free) available for whatever I've thought to throw at it. It just possibly might have violet eyes and a lovely singing voice.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Sublime looks pretty sweet.

LeN, I have coding requirements, but not front and centre core of my job large project like things. So the idea of investing that much money for one...not likely. But robust search and replace is important, and syntax highlighting is highly appreciated. Spell check is gravy.

And, on the flip side (though maybe I should work out another solution) I would like to have something to just make temporary notes with. One of those sites I was browsing for text editors mentioned something that seemed good...aha.. Yojimbo by the TextWrangler/BBEdit people. But...for something that complex, I'd probably end up back in Evernote--it just seems oddly wasteful sometimes to fire Evernote up for notes I don't need to keep, but just stuff I'm accumulating for this browsing period.

However, me and Evernote are going steady. Good god, between that and Astrid, I can almost fake being a grownup. I really like that application--that's one of the ones I bought because I thought they deserved my money, if you know the urge (amych seems to be having similar feels for Sublime).

What are the invisible files that show up when I save from the Mac to the NAS? For every angelina_jolie_02.jpg, there's also a ._angelina_jolie_02.jpg? And they're not small either--They're about the same size as the image file.

When I see them, I delete them. I'm assuming this won't break anything...but if it doesn't break anything, why are they there?

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Is it a previous versioning thing or something?

Yeah, I really love Evernote ever so much. I love it more every time I use it, and I know I'm not using it to its full potential yet.

Astrid, too, although it's not quite to my Evernote love levels. And it's Cozi making us not only look like adults, but like married adults who communicate with each other.

I really need to focus on using Astrid properly. I mean, forgetting is only one reason I miss deadlines. I'm perfectly capable of ignoring what's right there in face. So I'm trying to build my Astrid muscles.

And, man, since we have a new email application to get work email, it no longer hooks in so neatly to Tasker or Locale, so I've kinda fallen away on that front. Must concentrate and see what workarounds I can think of.

eta: I don't think it's a previous version...maybe a working version? It happens when I just create a file, the shadow appears. This could take up half the drive space, since each shadow is in line with the size of the real thing. And it doesn't matter what app I use--I'm saving out there from both Smultron and Elements, and getting the same thing.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

ita,

I think the invisible files are ghost files that are created when you access a mac disk in a non-mac operating system. I think deleting them are fine, but I am not sure.

TextMate is my favorite coding editor. It does mixed mode syntax highlighting very well (like bits of JavaScript in an HTML file) and is easily extended.

Check out Understanding File System Metadata for the skinny on those files. In the case of the image files I assume it's the Quick View preview data.

If you want something free for just occasional notes (and even for lite coding) EditPad Lite is good. I like it better than notepad++ just because the interface is more intuitive for my particular brain. (Very subjectived) [link]

Intended as an upscale notepad - not in the same class as Sublime and such. But it is perfect for quick disposable notes, light coding and such.

I think of editpad as the "stays out of my way" text editor -does not have the limitations and quirks of notepad and the compatatively small feature set is great when you are not going to be using those features anyway. Would not use it for heavy coding , but great if you are writing a 25 line scrip. Would not use it for full featured note taking, but great to write the equivalent of an electronic sticky note.

Our wings are not tired

Does anyone here have some USB hubs that they really like and that can provide a decent amount of power? I'd like one that has at least 7 ports, and probably more like 10+ and that can handle at least two iPhones and four iPads and then still handle a couple of jump drives or portable hard drives when needed.
