USB 2.0 is quite a bit faster than even gigabit Ethernet. I also travel with an Airport Express.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
yeah, the adapter is slower than Ethernet on a macbook pro, but pretty good.
Is there a mac in the place? You alternatively could plug another mac into the connection and create a wifi network.
I travel (when I go to hotels) with an airport express so that I create my own network in hotel rooms. I find that usually is a bit faster and less annoying than hooking up my devices individually to the wifi (if there is one available in hotels).
Traveling with an Airport Express is GENIUS.
My dad is thinking about buying a Mac, but is saying its close to $2,000. Just getting info so I can talk with knowledge. The outpatient facility he is getting cancer treatment at has Ethernet ports in the rooms, but no wifi.
omnis,
check refurb mac deals. much cheaper than $2K.
I was going to suggest refurbished too - here's a 13" Macbook Air for $1099 - [link]
13" Macbook Pro for $869 [link]
For standard surfing the Apple USB the Enet plug is plenty fast. On speedtest on my Air it's the same speed as my optimized 802.11n network and I have a 100Mbit incoming internet connection.
Yup, was thinking refurb as well. He is old fashioned, and wanting to get it at a store. I wonder which will win, old fashion or frugal. Also talking with Gris about his used one. The phone tag with time difference is slowing things down.
you could tell him to look at models in the store (to determine whether he wants a pro or air) and then actually buy it on the website.
that's what I did.
bring some purel though.
Yup. Or I can buy on campus and get education discount. Hopefully he will be cool with the used one.
