As someone who really does not know what they are doing in desktop publishing I find that PagePlus works well for me. It does everything I need, but I don't promise it will do everything you need.At least somewhat intutitive. If you download the free (highy limited version) you should get an offer to upgrade to the paid for 20 bucks pretty quickly which is what I did.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Er I guess the photoshop equivalent is photoplus. The Pageplus is more the equivalent of scribus.
No thoughts on the Fire? I've searched the MobileRead forums, but nobody else seems to be having this problem. It's as if the thing syncs but reverts to the book being on the cloud rather than on the device...
Wow, that was a way unspecific request, wasn't it?
I'm looking for a Photoshop replacement not in the photo-editing sense, but in the drawing/painting sense. Artrage is a straight up media replacement, so it barely makes any allowances ofr the sort of hybrid thing PS has going on.
So, something with text editing (and it would be *marvellous* if there were text effects, but not required) but also brushes.
I'll have a look at Photoplus and see what its range is.
I feel like I have a Mac program I like pretty well, but I've forgotten the name. I will look when I get back to my home computer.
I assume Seashore doesn't work any better than Gimp, since it's the same engine?
Some googling finds Pixelmator, which I think is the one I've used a few times and liked just fine, as well as Acorn, which I also feel like I've used. I don't use that type of program much on my Mac (Paint.net for Windows on my work computer does everything I need for classroom stuff) - honestly, I usually use one of the web-based imaged editing apps for work on my Mac, like pixlr.com
ETA: Apparently pixlr.com is based on the Gimp, and has the same text technique that annoyed you. So there you go.
I will test Seashore. At worst, it can't be less user friendly, and it's not X11 dependent, is it? I mean, it's great that the Gimp team is putting out such a complex and free tool, but every Mac artist I've asked for help has recommended step 1: Stop using Gimp.
eta: Unfortunately I installed Pixelmator but never evaluated it before the demo expired, so I have no idea if it fits my requirements better or not.
'Suela,
I think a hard reset of the device is in order. Then see if it still has problems.
Xplus has a whole suite. DrawPlus. It has brushes and a text tool. Never looked at it so not a rec.
Thanks, le n. I have texted her that information, I guess we'll see what happens.
