Buffistechnology 3: "Press Some Buttons, See What Happens."
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
so, there has to be a browser that adobe forms can use, yes? is this only a mac problem?
there is a workaround, to use bootcamp or parallels on a mac to run the windows program. There is a research program I have to do this for and I like parallels because theoretically I can run a windows program alongside of the mac programs.
You need to make sure you have enough RAM to do the side by side thing, but that might be the easiest thing to do in the short run until there is browser compliance.
This would be a lot cheaper than buying a computer.
Does anyone have an app they like for watching avi files on an ipad? My no frills VLC app stopped working, so I need to get a new one, and VLC streamer doesn't seem to work for me.
Lee,
damn. I used to have good luck with Goodplayer, but it has not been performing as well for me as I would like. It certainly is one of the better recommended apps out there.
I suspect that you will have the best viewing experience converting the videos via handbrake then then viewing them on an ipad.
Yeah, probably. I was hoping I could do it the lazy way though.
Omnis, we were using a previous version but kept having problems (accidental upgrades, things crashing, etc).
Le n, I have never used parallels, but that is sort of what I was thinking about. I don't mind buying more ram if need be.
As I understand it, adobe didn't/hasn't made the changes needed to comply with Lion or the last version of Snow Leopard Safari. We thought they would release a fix eventually but it's been months. In the mean time, we can't print forms correctly and the thing crashes repeatedly.
So, I like the idea of software so my paralegal isn't carrying around two computers.
Where do you get the AVIs from? I download with Vuze, and it can convert to iPad friendly formats on the fly. If you're torrenting, that's an option for the future. Won't help you with existing files, though.
ita, there is a service I use that can convert the files to ipad/ipod friendly formats, but their conversion is so clunky and the video is so low resolution, that I prefer to do it my way.
It doesn't really take that much time to use handbrake and the ipad presets, so if I have any kind of lead time (or set it up before bed), I'm golden.
Stephanie,
Okay, so you have about 2-3 ways to install this service. I like Parallels. There is also VMware Fusion, and Boot camp.

that is the boot camp set up guide. I think boot camp is the cheapest solution, but Parallels and VMWare are the most convenient.
Note; you need to have a copy of Windows, so you'll have to buy one, etc. to install and you need to have x amount of space on the hard drive to install.
You should absolutely backup the computer on an external hard drive before installing any of this.
Whenever I have installed Parallels, I have spent about 3-4 hours doing it (setting up parallels, and installing windows, and all the goddamn windows updates)

I didn't use it much, because it was such a resource hog and so slow.. I had to give over the computer to it entirely, and it was a separate step. But if I had a backlog, that'd be the way I'd address it.
handbrake doesn't really slow my computer down a lot when I use it, but typically I'm websurfing or writing when that happens, so I am not sure I would see a lot of slowdown.
