Buffistechnology 3: "Press Some Buttons, See What Happens."
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
I should be able to figure this out myself, but...
The original Star Wars was transferred from laserdisc onto DVD and they never corrected the aspect ratio - it's letterboxed in a 4:3 frame. So on my 16:9 TV, it's got a black band all the way around. It's the correct aspect ratio for the TV, but hovering in the middle of the screen. The Zoom button doesn't seem to do anything. Any clever ideas?
AHA. Thank you, manual. For some reason the "screen aspect" button isn't on any of my Harmony menus. All zoomed in now.
You've got a Mac hooked up to your TV, right? The Mac DVD player will let you zoom in.
Yeah, but this is the Blu-Ray. I just needed the original remote.
ND and I decided we needed to exchange gifts early for a little holiday cheer after Byron’s death, and I was
SO FREAKING EXCITED
when I opened my new Kindle Touch! It replaces a first-gen Kindle that I love more than I can express. I’m not fond of the ads only because I was so attached to the screensavers from the first gen, but I’m not complaining. It’s an awesome gift. It’s lighter and a lot faster than my old Kindle, and I find getting around the menus pretty easy. My only minor gripe is that occasionally I will brush the screen and skip forward or back, but that’s rare. I’m loving it as a whole.
Pix, that's awesome to hear, since I suspect next Sunday I'm going to open a Kindle Touch from Dad Santa, based on something he said today (i.e., "Don't buy a Kindle with the money we gave you for your birthday"). I like the 1st-gen Kindle but I lust after the skinnier lighter newer ones with the bigger drive.
You are going to love it, ‘Suela. I wasn’t expecting s big gift this year since we decided to go on vacation instead, so I was very surprised and
very
happy.
ETA: ND tells me that I actually had a 2nd-gen Kindle. I just know I’ve had it 3 years or so. All I can tell you is that this one is sleek, fast, and oh-so-pretty.
My only minor gripe is that occasionally I will brush the screen and skip forward or back, but that’s rare.
That's one thing I'm worried about, but I haven't really started using it to read, so I'm not sure the best way to hold it to avoid accidentally turning pages.
How much does the Kindle Touch hold? I'm looking forward to the realization that I am holding SO MANY BOOKS in my hand.
My Kindle Keyboard has... well, near enough to infinite space. Hundreds of books, anyway. I don't leave my books on there all the time - I remove them eventually, except for a few "that should always be on there" books like A Short History of Nearly Everything, and keep them archived on my computer (as well as the Amazon servers, for ones I bought)
P-C, did you get my e-mail with my book list, btw? I wasn't sure if your profile addy still works.
I've finally decided on my tablet--I'm getting the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 32GB, along with a bluetooth keyboard and a case with an easel in it so I can use the tablet as a laptop when I do my library research and to take notes in class.
I spent an hour or so with Cisco getting my wireless router hooked back up (why did I ever unplug the thing when Comcast replaced their box?), so my wifi works great. Now I just have to figure out how to use the wireless option on my printer.
