the firefox thing is tricky. I would recommend you sync your bookmarks with Safari (do you have a mac) and have the ipad sync bookmarks with safari.
Alternately, I use xmarks to sync my computers' bookmarks and then I use the app to access them if I need to.
Or, you could use pinboard, delicious and use dbd (ipad app) to access those bookmarks.
You might want to search the thread for ipad apps, but otherwise, gizmodo has an apps (best ipad apps) guide. If you give me an idea of the kind of apps you want, I might be able to help.

I have a stupid question -- how do I get stuff from my pc (say photos) to the iPad can I just drag stuff with explorer?

I think you can do that through iTunes, but I really don't know PCs. I will recommend Flipboard as an app. Love.

You can't really (I don't think) use explorer with the Ipad. At least on macs, you have to use Itunes as the main means to get things on and off the ipad. This has changed some with icloud and wifi sync.

How does this work? None of the file systems or phone OSes I've used have been remotely like that.

It's kind of goofy - when you sync the iPad through iTunes, under the Apps tab there's an option to add or remove files that certain Apps use. It makes more sense looking at it than I am describing, but it's pretty clunky. I have to use that for RecipeManager, pretty much everything else I move around using Dropbox or iCloud.
To be be fair, moving files on and off my Palm Pre was a similar process, just using different syncing software.

for this reason (and for 1000 other reasons), I recommend that goodreader and dropbox are two apps you might want to download ASAP. GR is the bomb diggity for downloading files and managing content that way.
