Do you have anti-virus software that scans e-mail? It could be borking things up for your e-mail client.

I hoped that was it, but disabling the AVG e-mail scanner and the McAfee Firewall and real-time protection didn't have any effect.
I removed the account and added it again, and it's downloading the inbox again. This time, I moved the largest files out of the inbox temporarily to keep it from hanging, so let's see if it gets all synced up this time.
It seems I need a new modem. Suggestions?
Actually, the old modem just needs the power switch replaced. Is that something a Best Buy or other shop could/would do?
Modem? Like for dial-up?

Godfuckingdammit. It managed to download the entire inbox and THEN get the error, so now it won't actually, you know, download new e-mail. I don't know what is going on. I was so close. So close.

Ahh, sorry, I've only ever used a cable modem that was supplied by the provider.
Unrelated, I'm looking for a small boombox or micro-stereo for the nursery(!). Something that'll play CDs as well as as iPod hookup would be nice. For the iPod, an aux input is fine; I don't need a proper dock. Any suggestions?
For the kids' room we just have an old pair of computer speakers and plug the iPod into the headphone jack. Lo-tech, but it works.
Oooh, I think I do have some old speakers in the attic. Thanks, Jessica!
I feel so geeky and up-to-the-minute: I ordered my iPhone 4s last night, and Pete is on the phone with the (very nice!) AT&T person ordering his and changing my plan to a family plan.
This means Pete will start texting. And possibly stop complaining about people texting instead of calling.
