I still have an aol account because I can't get my mother to stop using that email address. I use that address for the retail stores that like to email every day.
Is there any reason I shouldn't get iWork instead of Office? New computer with OS upgrade means I need to upgrade Office, but I see that iWork is cheaper. I use Word and Excel, but I don't do anything complicated with them. No formulas or anything.

I really like iwork - especially for things not too complicated. If you do not have a lot of excel spreadsheets with complicated formulas or long ass word documents that need master documents structure, etc. I think iwork is just fine for your needs.
I agree. I quite like iWork. It's not quite as powerful as Office, but it can do most things just fine. Pages in Page Layout mode is a good Publisher replacement too.
It will take you a little while to get used to them. You might have to do a tutorial or two to get comfortable. But otherwise I think they're great.

Can pages in page layout mode handle high resoluion graphics and produce high resolution pdfs as output?

My sister & sister-in-law just got MacBooks. I told SiL that she was better off with iWorks cause it is so much cheaper and you can export the documents as Word documents to send to people with Windows machines.
If you don't need all of the Office apps there is no reason not to just go with iWorks.

Okay. I downloaded a high-resolution image of the Aurora Borealis, loaded it into Pages and made it small, then created this PDF. I don't have Acrobat Professional so can't check for sure that the resolution stayed the same, but the file size didn't go down and zooming in on Preview seems to keep ridiculously high detail. I'd say that for this resolution, at least, the answer is "yes." Pages has the option of "reducing file size," but I simply never did so.
