Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
pokes head in warily...
I rarely venture in here because...I'm no technophobe, but my knowledge of tech stuff is not great.
I'm looking for advice. Here's my quandry: I have a Mac, I'm a Mac person, but I want to find a portable music player that a) I can afford, b) works with my Mac and c) has an FM radio.
All of which seem to rule out an iPod of any kind. So, what I want to know is: Do I have to use iTunes because I have a Mac? Can I use Itunes on anything besides a iPod?
Right now I'm merely aware that MP3s exist. I have no personal experience with them whatso ever. The radio is important to me because I like to listen to NPR a lot. But I also want to listen to music again. I currently only tune in on my car radio on the weekends when the programs on NPR are less news related.
I used to have a Walkman cassette player with a radio that I lost, along with the tapes in a fire 6 or 7 years ago. and that was the last time I spent much time walking. I want to start again, but I really need an audio companion to help me stay motivated.
quester, you can get an accessory for the iPod that will tune in radio stations. [link] I don't know about other options, sorry.
Maybe try googling
mp3 player radio.
Here are some reviews.... [link]
Looks like Creative makes a lot of mp3 player / radio thingies. Not positive, but they do mention drag-n-drop USB, which makes me think they'd work on a Mac.
Thanks tommy and -t.
I've checked those out, but it still leaves me with the question of whether songs from iTunes would work on them or if some other download store would work with Mac's OS.
Songs you
bought
with iTunes will only work on iPods. Songs you
made
with iTunes from a CD will work on any mp3 player, but only if you change the iTunes default to make mp3's....
eta: And you can't use iTunes to sync music to a non-iPod. You'll have to use some other way. Either drag-n-drop via usb, or maybe the player comes with its own sync software.
Damn. That site is hot. Expensive, but very pretty tech stuff.
Ooooh, shiny.
If someone could buy me one of these before I give birth so I can stay online in the hospital, that'd be great. Thanks in advance!
(Of course I'll also be bringing my Treo, but the keyboard isn't really designed for longish-term typing.)
A friend was going to get one, but got distracted by something as yet unreleased that has a bigger screen. He thinks
he's
excited. I totally can't wait.
I've got an appointment this afternoon to take DH's iPod to the Genius Bar, but I have a feeling it's pretty hopeless. This means he needs a new iPod AND a new iPod recorder accessory to record interviews with (since the iTalk he has isn't compatible with the new iPod models).
The Apple store seems to have three options - anyone have experience/opinions on relative quality?
