ita, doesn't Picasa install some additional software that people didn't like?

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
I haven't noticed any additional software on my Mac. What sort of stuff?
I don't recall. I thought I had read about this a couple of years ago, but if you haven't noticed anything, this issue might be moot.
I am very annoyed with Picasa right now. I downloaded the new version onto my Macbook, and for some reason I cannot log into my Google account with it. It keeps rejecting the password.
Argh. My little Iomega portable hard drive stopped working - I plug it into the USB and it's "I'm on" light comes on and it sounds like it's spinning, but it doesn't mount and the light goes out again after about a minute. Disk Utility can't see it to run diagnostics. Tried another cable and another computer to plug into. I just tidied all my firewire cables away, but I'll dig one up tomorrow and try that on the Mini, but i don't have high hopes that that will do any good.
Any ideas?
What advantages do you get by logging into your Google account? Does it have web album space? I've never even considered that.
Man, if something this powerful were connected to flickr, I'd plotz.
Does it have web album space? I've never even considered that.
Yes, Google photos. So with Picasa on the Macbook I should be able to upload directly into my Google Photos account. That's what I used to be able to do; I don't understand why it's having so much trouble with the account information now. I've restarted Picasa three times, and it cannot make the connection properly.
Maybe if I restart the computer...
Unrelatedly, I want to beef up my backup procedures. So far, it's ad hoc.
But I figure I might as well use Time Machine, since it's there, right? So I have a long list of network attached storage I can choose from for that. I also have a Linux box and an XP machine to back up--how should that inform my choice of storage device, and what are my automated backup choices (hopefully free!) for those? eta: As well as trying to automate/background backup of three OSes, I'm seeing that some of them provide DLNA streaming and remote access, which would be RAD.
Time to hit up bestbuy.com and read product descriptions. But I value Buffista quality recommendations.

Huh. Nifty. I just tried it, and it worked just fine. I hadn't realised Google gave me photo storage space. I need to check their terms of use.
