This last upgrade (love! sparkly hearts!) solved my last problem because it's so big it incorporates a separate ten-key. I am so much faster on ten key.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
So I have an HDTV and a new DVD player and they're connected with big cables with three ends, and I still don't have an HD picture. I got a better picture with my old Zenith tv from 1995, which I'm sorely tempted to go back to.
What am I doing wrong this time?
Can you be more specific about the cables? Are you using component (red, blue, green) or HDMI (big with a flattish connector)?
I have an iPad 2. What apps do I want? (Other than what I've already ported from my iPhone, that is. And it's wifi only, so I don't need anything "mobile")
Instapaper. Reeder. Comixology. Flipboard. Google Earth.
Be sure and check under "Genius" in the App Store for iPad upgrades from your iPhone apps.
Jess, the imdb app is particularly stunning on iPad!
Zen, I'd be inclined to think the cables as well. Can you schmooze the tv salesperson in the store and get some practical advice? With maybe hands-on demos using the display equipment? The electronics department manager at our Best Buy is a wizard, and very enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge.
iPad specific apps I particularly like: Bento, Index Card, Osmos, Magic Piano, and Enigmo. The Ice and Fire weather app sumi linked to a while back is beautiful.
Jessica, it's hooked up with red-yellow-white cables - looks like component but isn't. The DVD player says HDMI on the front, so it must be possible to hook it up that way, but I don't see the connector. What does it look like?
That must be the problem - I thought it was hoked up with HDMI, but it must not be. I foresee a trip to Radio Shack in the morning.
The red, yellow, and white cables are old AV cables and will not give you an HD signal. The HDMI is probably the best way to go: they have a very flat metal connector, almost like a USB connector, and can carry both video and sound on that one connector. They will sell the cables at Radio Shack, though they're notoriously overpriced at brick and mortar stores. If you want to get it working tomorrow, that's your only choice, but if you can wait a few days you could order one from Amazon, monoprice.com, newegg.com, or even radioshack.com for less than $10. At the Radio Shack store it'll probably be closer to $20, if not higher.
