Those keys should be programmable, bon. At least they were in my Compaq keyboard--look in your control panel, perhaps, for a place to fiddle with them. Maybe also your system tray, if searching through your installed programs nets you nothing.
What model keyboard?
Model RT7D40. Control Panel -> Keyboard is pretty basic; that's all I see for accessing the keyboard through the desktop. The Device manager kicked me to the same thing. ISTR being able to change the keys on other desktops, which is why I ask, but I wouldn't be surprised if I can't do it.

What kind of things are breaking SA? Kubuntu / Ubuntu has been very stable for me, but then I have a very generic desktop PC so everything is pretty stable.
