paving the way for retina-display level pixel-density monitors.
I can't wait!
Or maybe I can, until the MacBook Pro has one of those high pixel-density displays.

I would imagine the MacBook will see it before I get mine. They're talking about retina displays for the iPad (though #2 or #3 is a source of debate) so the leap in size from an iPad to a Macbook isn't that bad.
I, on the other hand, await a 23"+ retina display. I may have a bit of a wait.
This seems like a good place to ask... for my Mobile Apps class I need temporary use of a Mac that will run the latest version of OSX -- my 6yo iBook, which is fine for most things, won't run the Apple SDK for the iPhone apps portion of the curriculum.
Ideally, I'd love to borrow a more modern Mac laptop of any kind whatsoever for about two months. I'd treat it obsessively well, guard it with my LIFE, and sing it to sleep each night, and only install the SDK IDE for my actual class work. I could pay for safe shipping both ways, which has to be an order of magnitude less expensive than buying a new and/or used one.
Help with work laptop. Seems a lot of disk permissions are out of whack, so trying to boot from install DVD. I hear the drive spin up, the screen is grey with the dark grey apple logo. Then it just sits there. The DVD drive stops spinning. Screen remains. I've tried holding down C on boot. I booted to the internal, and changed pref to boot from DVD. Same result. Ack! Any thoughts?
I'm in the market for a laptop right now, but I'm a pc girl, so it'll probably be another Sony. Only I'm a little cranked because their trade in program means I'll be without a laptop for a few weeks, maybe more. Well, okay, not without a laptop since I have four others in the house. But you know what I mean! It would be an inconvenience to migrate! Except that, you know, I have a terabyte of external storage, and automatic backups, and actually, it'll probably be fine.
Hmph.
I guess I should just do it.

I'm out at sea until Sunday night, but let me check what my rental inventory is for the next few months. I may be able to help you out.
Theo, how soon do you need the laptop? I have a MacBook with a broken screen I could repair, but obviously that's gonna take at least a few days. Plus the battery isn't in great shape, so if ND comes through I'd take him up on it instead.
update:
One of the students came by right after I posted. We connected his laptop to mine, put mine in disk mode, and did the disk utility and disk warrior thing. The laptop passed all the hardware tests. But it still won't boot from the optical drive. Most interesting. We noticed when booting in verbose mode, that there is a line in the firmware from the university. Couldn't tell what it was, but I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
I mentioned to IT about the no boot from optical. We shall see what they say. And I'll see how it behaves, now that the directory is all cleaned up. I'm wondering if it's due to putting it to sleep so much, and rarely shutting down. So I will endeavor to shut down at nights instead of sleeping it.
If I buy a laptop with a 1080p screen but no blu-ray drive, or a blu-ray drive but no 1080p screen, those are both kinda pointless to me, right?
How much is instant gratification worth? My Mac Mini arrived today, but it turns out that what I thought was a spare HDMI cable is actually an HDMI-mini HDMI cable, and therefore not very useful. So do I order a cheap one from Amazon and get it on Monday or Tuesday, or go to Target and buy one RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW?
(Okay, Amazon's prices are between $3-9 for a 6ft cable, and I have Amazon Prime so shipping is free. The cheapest 6ft cable on target.com is $30. That's a pretty steep premium to pay for 36 hours of extra play-with-new-toy time. Damnit.)
