Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Yay. The Nook would definitely be on my list. I handled one last time I was in a city, and I liked it a lot. It was actually a plus for me that the main screen wasn't touch (smudges!) but that there was a small section that was.
And yeah, about the Amazon thing. I decided I was being ridic and caved and bought some emergency supplies for my new car from Amazon. The entire process was a clusterfuck, down to them splitting the order really randomly and shipping via completely different couriers. Thereby sending stuff by post office to my physical address, which does not get US mail, forcing my little post office to bewilderedly try to find me and have me come in and pick it up. Twice. So yeah, boycott back on. If I'm avoiding you for tech reasons, but also your service sucks it? You are not getting my business no matter how gargantuan you are.
No problem, chica. Happy to help a Bitch out.
Insent, Erin.
eta: Having finished my first book on the device (Hunger Games)I can happily say it was a pleasing reading experience. I'm predisposed to read the digital word. I've purchased a cheapie I'm almost finished, and am still ploughing through some free stuff, as well as what can be borrowed out there...so far I'm happy with what I have.
I found decals to make it look like HAL, and then I'll need a protective sleeve.
If you like SF/Fantasy, there are a lot of free books available from Baen books (their goal is to addict you to their authors. It kind of works.) and you can buy books from them for a bit cheaper than the Amazon/BN stores too.
Nook book borrowing rocks! I can't wait to lend people stuff.
I'll be sure to traipse on over to Baen.
My sister has been having trouble with Yahoo mail, and is wondering if there was anything else out there good other than gmail. I hadn't really thought about it--any other solid providers?
Google has come up with a new image format, WebP, to compete with JPEG.

It actually sounds pretty good.
In order to gauge the effectiveness of our efforts, we randomly picked about 1,000,000 images from the web (mostly JPEGs and some PNGs and GIFs) and re-encoded them to WebP without perceptibly compromising visual quality. This resulted in an average 39% reduction in file size.
ita, once I sort out my BN username, I'd be happy to loan you books as well. My tastes run pretty clearly in mystery and suspense (big surprise) but I think I do have Freedom (TM).
My list isn't long, so I am happy to post it and anyone who wants I'll loan. I didn't even know about this feature until someone here mentioned it. I get the books take out the DRM and put them on my kindle so I can read them.
That would be awesome. I listed most of my books, but I'd be happy to post a full list, so we can do a Buffista Lend thing.
Love the lib, but the wait list for some newer books is crazy; if I could get at some of 'em sooner, that would be great.
Nook book borrowing rocks!
Who would want to borrow rocks...oh, wait. Anyway, yay for book lending! That's so awesome.
