Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Well, for some shows (like BSG and
Caprica)
you can download the commentary. (Of course then you gotta make sure you play the commentary in sync with the show.) But I suppose not many shows offer that.
Personally I've been moving from buying DVDs to downloading from iTunes for environmental, storage space and convenience issues. I now have the last five seasons of
Doctor Who
on my MacBook Pro. (Please don't tell me the
Doctor Who
commentaries are totally awesome.)
The Apple TV is wired to my receiver. The digital signal passes from the Apple TV to my stereo.
I used to have a G5 hooked up exactly the same way. (It died. I replaced it with an Airport Express just for music - I miss having access to iTunes video on the TV, but other than the price I can't see the benefit of an Apple TV over a Mini.)
I just connect my MacBook Pro directly to my HD TV. That works fine, except there's a cable I have to try to not step on.
I've mentioned this before, but you need to use HDMI cable for this, as Apple DRM prohibits using analog cables (eg VGA) to display HD iTunes content.
A DVI cable will work, as long as the monitor supports HDCP.
But a DVI cable won't carry audio. (I had a DVI cable going into the TV and RCA audio going into the AV receiver.)
I'm willing to shell out $3 for an episode if I just liked it that much and I didn't manage to save it on my TiVo to get me over until the DVD comes out, or if I just want to have a look. I have a few SPN episodes, some Eureka, and some Middleman for those reasons. The difference between 99¢ and $2.99 isn't enough for me to rail at the relatively smaller selection available to rent.
A DVI cable will work, as long as the monitor supports HDCP.
Yeah, forgot to mention that.
USB cufflinks. Except for, ya know, the price, I'd totally get one of those.
You could also make a nano cufflink at this point, yeah?
That price is insane. I like how it's advertised as a 4GB drive, but it's really 2GB per cuff link.
Huh. I had thought Ping had some sort of Facebook integration. And I wasn't the only confused one.
Confusion Over Facebook's Brief Appearance in Ping for iTunes
With yesterday's release of iTunes 10, Apple also deployed a new music-focused social network feature known as Ping. When it initially launched yesterday, users creating their profiles were presented with an option to use Facebook Connect to find friends who had already created their own Ping profiles. It is unclear, however, whether the feature was functioning properly, as a number of users reported that searches yielded no results.
The Facebook Connect feature now seems to have disappeared from Ping, with many users not even realizing it was ever there. The flurry of activity has generated some confusion in the Apple media, especially after All Things Digital chatted with Steve Jobs about the lack of Facebook integration before people realized that the functionality was in fact partially present.
And Facebook is nowhere on Ping too. Currently, there is no linking, sharing or participation of any kind with Facebook - or Twitter or MySpace either - on Ping, which will work only on the iTunes software on computers, iPhones and iPods.
When I asked Jobs about that, he said Apple had indeed held talks with Facebook about a variety of unspecified partnerships related to Ping, but the discussions had gone nowhere.
The reason, according to Jobs: Facebook wanted "onerous terms that we could not agree to."
