All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story. Tell me a story.

Yes, yes, and yes. And I tried quitting iTunes after specifying the folder. I didn't have this problem when I first put the music on this drive (with the old computer).

I kind of wonder if I should use the iPod as my starting point. I'll lose some things that I haven't synced, but I probably won't remember what they were.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

aurelia, it might be worth deleting the aliases in your itunes library and starting over from scratch. allowing the library to relearn where all your songs are could fix it.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I think what you need to do is go back, re-specify your itunes library, check keep itunes library organized.

Then go to Advanced --> Consolidate Library

I've tried the suggestions from SA and le nubian. Now I have a completely empty iTunes library.

I also tried replacing the iTunes music folder on the hard drive with an alias of the iTunes music folder on the external drive. No love.

I'm at a loss.

How about the firewire connection question? Can I connect the iPod thru the external drive?

Can I connect the iPod thru the external drive?

That's what I do, but my external drive also calls itself a hub, so I'm not sure how universal that answer is. It seems like it should work, though, you're just daisy chaining peripherals.

Edited because I remembered something possibly important. At least on mine, to use the firewire ports on the drive, it has to be connect to the computer via firewire, ditto for USB, so if your iPod cable is firewire you should be golden. So to speak.

Oh, also, did you try leaving the original iTunes folder on the computer in place, and putting an alias to the folder on the drive inside of it? Replacing didn't work for me, but nesting did.

Nesting didn't work either.

Ooooh. I may have it. Add to Library, select folder. Things are showing up in the library. Once it's done processing the nearly 6000 tracks I'll be able to see if I've lost playlists, ratings and comments.

er, that's what I meant for you to do, but I didn't explain it well or clearly. sorry, aurelia, but I'm glad you figured it out.
