Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Shameful confession time: I just learned that, on a Mac, if you select multiple files and then right-click (or control-click) and select "Archive files," it zips them.
I totally didn't know that, and I've been using Stuffit for my zipping needs. THIS IS SO MUCH FASTER!
t edit
I'd seen the "Archive files" option in the right-click menu before, but I didn't know what it actually did, so I just ignored it.

I wonder what else I don't know this computing machine can do. Perhaps it can connect me to the Interpipe.

It can also store your recipes and calculate your biorhythms!

Works on Windows too, Send To -> Compressed File
Perhaps it can help me tabulate columns of numbers! I hope so, because my abacus is broken.
The computer "trick" I've shown a few people who were delighted is one I am sure you all already know. But in case you don't, you can type whatever you want into a URL and then press control and "enter" and www and .com are entered for ya.
(I think newer broswers work with just hitting "enter"; I was showing people this years and years ago when just hitting "enter" didn't do it.)
I have and am generally enamored with my iPhone, despite objecting to it and Apple's general behavior regarding it on various ethical grounds. Were I buying right now, I'd probably get one of the Android phones - either the Droid or possible the actual Google-branded phone (I misremember its actual name) that apparently nobody bought - but I would recommend the iPhone to anybody without my personal ethical objections and interest in futzing around with open software. It's the leader of the pack for good reason.
I agree with this, right down to the Google Nexus One lust.
(Although I have been experiencing a dramatic increase in dropped calls lately, but I blame that on AT&T trying to "upgrade" their NYC coverage.)

But that (at least in the opposite direction, on Vista) is so damned slow. I have to use a third party app for decent responsivity.
I'm still trying to work through the multi-touch on my new MacBook. If I slide on the touchpad with 4 fingers it explodes all the windows apart, but as soon as I move my fingers the view goes away and I can't work out how to actually move within the exploded view.
I understand there's some printed material that came with the computer, and this thing called Help and another called Google, but it's a Mac, dammit. I should be able to intuit a next step.

I just experimented with this. Try sliding with four fingers to get all the windows. Then with your four fingers still on the trackpad, move them to the side. (I moved mine to the left). Then you can select which window to make current.

(Prior art for "slide to unlock" appearing in just about every SF film or TV show ever.)

I WANT TO GO HOME RIGHT NOW AND TRY THIS.
