No studying? Damn! Next thing they'll tell me is I'll have to eat jelly doughnuts or sleep with a supermodel to get things done around here. I ask you, how much can one man give?

Our wings are not tired.

I've found that my dependence on Tivo has greatly decreased with Comcast's Video on Demand. But I understand that what is offered via VoD varies greatly from one Comcast region to another.

So, if I blow off paying for TV entirely, I should be able to hook up the Tivo to the HD TV, watch broadcast HD and SD, and record all of those in SD on the Tivo. After getting some kind of internet service also.

I guess I should mention that I bought a new house, so now have VERY little budget to go around.

Congrats on the house, Lori!

If the HD channels aren't encrypted, yes. I don't know what comes through on "broadcast" anymore as a standalone. I have a cable line that is split; half goes to the tv and the other half to the Tivo. I had always been wrongly told that a digital cable line could't be split.

Thanks!

Yeah, there are several over-air HD channels that I can tune with my old antenna on the new TV. Nothing fancy, like Discovery or anything. But sacrifices must be made. I had a split like that set up on my old TV, and I think I can still do that. Will give it a shot.

Excellent! I only just discovered the HD thing on Superbowl Sunday. I was playing around with the tv and the inputs and wondering why the tv channels said "5" and "5.1" and "5.2". It was so awesome to see HD without having to pay extra for it.

Series 2 Tivos aren't able to work with over the air broadcasts. The Tivo HD can work with an over the air HD antenna. Series 2 Tivo's don't have the correct type of tuner to work with an antenna.

Yeah, I wouldn't know about that limitation, because I've always had cable.

Lori, maybe you can just get the most basic cable?

Does anyone know much about AT&T U-Verse?
I have U-verse now, for a couple months. So far, pretty good! You can get a package with a DVR, and depending on how far away you are from the signal, you can watch/record 2 HD shows and 2 SD shows at a time. Or record 2/2 and watch a recorded show. It streams the channel(s) you are watching, rather than modulating all the channels at once. They have some free on-demand stuff that is almost Hulu. The internet has been rather consistent at 5.93 Mbs down and .89 Mbs upload for the mid-tier internet package. Dunno much about the phone. I have my iPhone and a Magic Jack, and that is more than enough.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

It's too confusing. I'm paralyzed by too many options and a limited understanding of how they all work. I may just go to plain broadcast tv and watch everything else on Netflix or Amazon. I need to save some money anyway.
