Also, I have a 2004 Series 2 Tivo, which I believe is not HD compatible. Not exactly sure what that really means. But I'm thinking I need a new DVR anyway, so could get one for cheap/free with the whole U-verse package.
le nubian, what sort of feedback have you heard? And which Tivo do you have and how does it not play nice together?
I bought my TiVo in 2003 - it is a Series 2. If you google UVerse and TiVo you'll get to the TiVo Community forums and they seem to suggest that there isn't any dongle that can get TiVo to work with UVerse. The New Tivos (that have a cable card slot) I guess work. But I'm not entirely sure about this.

Nope, it's not--you'd have to get an HD TiVo (and there are rumors TiVo is coming out with something new and spiffy in a couple weeks?). Those have cablecard slots. But honestly, I don't see a really big difference between watching on my Series 2 TiVo and watching in HD...SOME, yes, but not a HUGE difference. Mostly what I've been doing is flipping to HD, watching on that, and if I want to rewind, just hitting the input button until I get to the TiVO. :)

On the other hand, I quickly deleted all my SD channels from my channel guide because the HD was so much prettier and I haven't looked back.
I still have my series 2 TiVo hooked up, but even when I had a subscription going for it I barely used it. I could totally see the difference.
Oh, I can see the difference, but not enough that I want to pay for a Tivo HD upgrade (I have lifetime Tivo on my Series 2, so it would mean upgrading AND paying for another subscription).
Ah, so my lifetime Tivo on my Series 2 will still record and work, just in SD?
I bought the series 3 during a period where there was a lifetime subscription switchover (with premium, natch), and apart from the limited number of shows I can store I have no regrets. I had my series 2 upgraded with an additional drive, but for some reason I'm more nervous about tweaking this one.
I should go look at weaknees and see if it's as easy this time round.
lori, good question. I currently have my Tivo set up to record my non-HD Comcast cable box. I watch HD directly through the tv, as the tv has a digital tuner and I've found that the HD signals are not encrypted (Comcast Oakland). I don't know about Series 2 Tivo working with an HD cable box.
