Buffistechnology 3: "Press Some Buttons, See What Happens."
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
I just spent nearly three hours tearing my hair out over a SECOND new router not working before I realized I'd plugged in the wrong grey ethernet cable. (Turns out it's the modem that provides the interbunny connection and not the Tivo. Who knew?)
Note to self - label things!!
I have a question about OS upgrades. If I were to get an unlocked Android phone from a different vendor and OS upgrades are pushed out by my carrier, would TMobile be sending them to me too? Anyone know?
Probably not. And I wouldn't necessarily seek the TMobile upgrade out. Carrier-specific OS upgrades do funny things like disable fuctionality if it's not a supported feature. I'd go after the generic OS upgrade, tweaking your settings to be compatible with your carrier.
Besides, TMobile is sloooooow with OS upgrades. My last BB upgrade came almost 8 months after it was officially released by RIM.
From reading around, it wasn't obvious what other way I could get upgrades. It would complicate things if I did receive it, since it wouldn't have been a replacment of same. And not receiving it would, well, put me behind the curve, and the curve was the whole point.
TMobile looks to be being decently timely with their update for the Cliq, which is what I have now. Since they don't support the Droid/Milestone, don't know where that would come from. Googling wasn't suggesting much useful.
That puts a distinct kibosh on the idea of getting a Milestone.
hey, has anyone who is a heavy user of Word switched recently from 2003 to 2007? I knew I'd have to change eventually (it's what the gov't uses now) so I had it installed today. I knew they'd fucked Word up royally but now that I'm actually using it? I SERIOUSLY want to cockpunch Microsoft.
Does anyone have any hints about making it usable again?
It's seems to have deleted my normal.dot too. feh.
It is hard, lisah, when nothing is where it used to be. I suggest using Help to find features you're looking for. It's quicker than trying to poke through options.
Some stuff I use frequently: headers and footers are under Insert. Margins are under Page Layout. Spelling and Grammar, Word Count, and Track Changes are under Review. Zooming is under View. Print and Save As are accessed by clicking the Microsoft symbol in the top right.
Anything else, just ask. I may know where it is.

Well, Office 2007 changed all the other file extensions; maybe this has a new extension too?

Thanks, Dana. I found an interactive thing on their website were you can look at the old interface and it will show you were the command is on the new interface. The problem is that I'd customized all my toolbars and had macros and they are all gone.
Mostly I want to vent. I figured things are generally kind of hard right now, so why not through another challenge in the mix? Possibly not the smartest thing I've ever done.
Heh, yeah, there's a hell of a learning curve before it's comfortable again. Among the things that have helped:
The quick access toolbar, aka the top line on the screen where the doc name is displayed. You can add frequently used commands there so you never have to hunt for them (mine has save, print, accept change, keep with next, undo and redo).
Ditto with the quick style gallery (on the main bar at the top of the screen) - it's worth the time to rearrange the icons there so styles you frequently use are at the top.
Other than that, it's mostly learning where the hell they've stashed things. I like that "change case" can be accessed from the main ribbon. I'm less fond of the fact that to insert a table you go to insert, to insert a comment you go to review, and to insert a page break you go to layout, when they all used to be grouped under insert. Feh.

Oh this is good to know!
I figured out the quick access toolbar and put, among other things, Insert Page Break on it right away.
Thanks for your help, Dana!
okay, here's a puzzler. I have a document that I made changes in, sent it to a reviewer who also made changes. Got it back and used the Next button on the Reviews place wtf ever it is now to go through the reviewer's changes and, while my changes are still visible, I can't use the Next or Previous buttons to get to them. Which is a problem! It's a 600+ page document with changes throughout and I'm just supposed to look through the pages for changes now? I can't figure this one out at all.
(Thank you all for listening to my whining)
ETA NEVERMIND! I figured it out. User error.
Change is hard! (TM)
