Angel: Connor, this is Spike and Illyria. Guys, this is Connor. Connor: Hi. umm...I like your outfit. Illyria: Your body warms. This one is lusting after me. Connor: Oh...no, I--I--it's just that it's the outfit. I guess I've had a thing for older women. Angel: They were supposed to fix that.

Though it can take a bit to set up you can use Microsoft Live to do parental controls for Internet access.

The filters aren't very flexible but you can allow and block specific sites as well and you can look at logs and manage allowed and blocked sites remotely.

It is also free.

I feel like some sort of Microsoft pusher here, but they provide some good free stuff.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Could you set up an additional user account on Windows for a child, and prevent that account from installing software? That seems to be the biggest way for kids to get viruses on a computer - they'll install anything from anywhere....

Perkins, that would be great!

Will do!

I'm using the free version of avast! [link] and I'm pretty happy with it. I don't know about parental controls, though. It's fast and seems thorough.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, so I sound like a broken record, but my ISP provides three licenses to an anti-virus application. I have Charter now, and Comcast did the same thing.

The virus tech is still working on my computer. I guess the tech on Sunday missed a bunch of stuff. I'm locking that puppy down hard before CJ gets it back. I may just allow access to his school/homework websites, gmail, and that is it. Don't know if I should let him back on Facebook or not.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I have a question re: computers and routers.

We have a cable modem attached to a router and one of the things plugged into a router is a PC that seems to be fucking up the router and cable modem. Everything is fine with the network until that computer turns on (via ethernet connection) and then whole network stops working AND it takes me 20-30 minutes to reset the modem and the router.

Is it possible the computer is overloading the router or something like that? Any recommendations for what I should do to try to fix the situation? It is Windows XP, supposedly no viruses.

What do people think of a product like this: [link]

It seems like an inexpensive and thorough way to maintain backups and share files on a home network.

I have something like that set up with mirrored drives. I think it's a great type of device to store data you don't want to lose.
