Matt, I think that probably makes more sense than whatever the official reason was.

I'm not sure that the battle between Eowyn and various orcs that Theoden witnesses is in the regular version.
It's not. It's only in the EE that you see Eowyn kicking the ass of that Orc general and really looking like a competent warrior in her own right. It shall always remain my great disappointment, however, that Eowyn didn't stand up stronger against the Witch King. She didn't cower nearly as much in the books.
Jackson did seem to have a harder time with the female characters, didn't he? Though it's not as if Tolkein gave him much to work with. At least Galadriel was perfect (except for the Smurf Vision special effects).
I've said it before and I'll say it again -- I was disappointed that they didn't hew closer to Tolkien's original dialogue for the scene between Eowyn and the Witch King. In interviews they've [Jackson and Boyens] said that the language was too baroque, but they lifted Galadriel's "In place of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen..." almost word for word. I think they could have found something a little closer that still functioned. And with it being one of my favorite scenes in the book, it made for a bit of a let down.
Skipping and poking head to post that, according to the Buffista Calendar, today is Burrell and her DH's anniversary, and to wish for a great day and a wonderful year together to them both.
Happy Anniversary, Burrell and Burrell's DH!!!

One of the things I love about the first half of RotK is when whatever that White Light thing is that goes up in Minas Morgul -- you see Sam and Frodo seeing it right at the Minas Morgul gates, Gandalf and Pippin seeing it from the walls of Minas Tirith and the men at Osgiliath seeing it too.
