For the past two weeks, high school nurse Colleen Kahler has been on high alert. Her office, which typically treats routine ailments such as sore throats, stomach aches and pulled muscles, has been transformed into a screening center for an unlikely disease with a name that recalls a bygone era -- whooping cough.
New Trier had 26 confirmed cases of pertussis by November 16, or one third of all those reported in suburban Cook County. The school's first case was detected in late August when students returned from summer break. There have also been reports of sporadic cases at other high schools in the area.
Hm. A couple of weeks ago I was working with kids from New Trier. Now I'm all paranoid any time I cough.
One more-- in the drugs box, what are the two that connect drugs and bomb?

I saw that about 20 minutes ago. It's annoying, since I bought mine before the T-day discount. I'm somewhat comforted that you can't order it online for pick-up; you have to go in and fight for it. But it turns out that both my brother and my mother both need new DVD players. Apparently DVD players, like celebrities, die in threes. Or maybe my family is under some kind of curse. Hm. That's worrying.
My mom's player probably still plays, but the motor that opens the tray has suffered some kind of breakdown. After dinner my brother and I opened it up and fiddled with its guts a little, but couldn't find anything obvious to fix. I did manage to keep my brother from blinding us both with the laser, though, so I'll count that as a win. It was a super-cheap player I got her a few years back, so I'm kind of impressed it lasted as long as it did.
Anyway, I'm gonna brave the madness tomorrow and see if I can get him one, and he or my SIL can get one for my mom. And if they're gone by the time I get there, oh well. At least there's a Circuit City in the strip mall a block away, so I'll just have to deal with the crazy in the store, and not the crazy on the roads.
I should see when they open tomorrow, actually. Ugh.

really? cause I ordered mine for pick up. but maybe that's a burbank loophole.
Hmph. Did you order it today?
ETA: Actually, the specials do vary by zip, so maybe Burbank wins. (...This time.)
I just ate mashed potatos, and a little bit of turkey, which makes me happy even if it wasn't nearly as good as Allyson's and Lori's. Also, there's a new GA on soon, which is also happy making.
I did order it today. The magic of Burbank finally pays off. Also, weird.
My cable reception is for crap. So no GA for me.
Pfft.
oh sucky, ita. It's a pretty good one. Too bad you aren't here cause you could watch it on one the 6 TVs in the house.
