If I heard it I'd think "that means going crazy and that person must be British somehow."

I googled "flip your nut" (the exact phrase) and only got 13 matches. So it's a tad obscure....
A particular student ? None of the generalized student terms I can think of worked.

Except in some very strange and uncommon circumstances, I would take it exactly as you meant it, ita. I've had some entertaining reactions to saying "flip out like mammal" in non-Buffista areas.
