I'm inherently DIY. Not sure if it comes from perfectionism, fear of The People or reluctance to ask for help. Or from a sorta crunchy upbringing when it comes to beautification. Makeup to my mother was lipstick. In the past decade, she's flirted with eyeliner and brow pencil as hers fade, but she's a little mystified by all that. All my girliness is self taught.
edit: and as soon as I shoot the cat, I'm going to start gluing my nails on....

How funny - I never thought about this aspect of my upbringing affecting how I beautify. My mother had pots and tubes and jars and bottles. She had her hair colored and cut all the time. She owned more makeup than Tammy Faye. Once spas started catering to more than the wealthy, she started going and pushing my sister and I to go.
The odd thing about it, though is that she's not at all about "having" to look good. She's not the type to never go outside without her make-up on or hair done like I am. She's more about, "It's nice to be pampered and relax and sit in a jacuzzi."
Spas are fun! Free fruit! And cucumber slices!
