omnis, I have an idea for a present. When my mom had surgery a few months ago, a friend of my parents sent frozen prepared meals from Dine Wise: [link] They are REALLY amazingly good, and they have a lot of choices and packages. I think that would be a really nice Christmas gift. I don't know how much you can spend, but if you did like a week's worth of meals for them, they could probably spread them out (by doing some of their own cooking when they feel up to it) for several weeks.
