Natter 47: My Brilliance Is Wasted On You People
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
::stumps off with cane, muttering 'Disco still sucks'::
Yeah, I felt that way once. Boy was I shocked when it turned out it had never sucked in the first place. Sorry Theo. I think it was the "Hot Stuff" scene at the dole queue in THE FULL MONTY that finally made me say "Uncle!"
First real concert I went to was Kansas. Not too many bands came to Green Bay, which was the closest venue....
Thanks for the website, ChiKat, that should do me.
Since we're talking about cheesy music...
My sister just got a gig playing with
Clay Aiken!
I forsee effortless mocking for ages to come.
I wanna be in the Buffista band...
In highschool, I was in an anti-drugs-and-drinking group, and we had this sketch that featured Total Eclipse. Did it all. the. time. Evil stabby reaction to that song, though if I can manage to leave it on for more than a minute, I usually start singing along.
Ahh, anti-drinking. So glad I got out of that phase. Anyone want to pass me a mojito?
First real venue concert was Talking Heads on their last tour (the one that STOP MAKING SENSE documents).
My second, for reasons I still can't recall (probably the weed) was The Moody Blues, who were atrocious.
Of course, it didn't help them sound any better that the opening act was a guitar trio from Texas called Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble. Who I'd actually heard of because Vaughn had played on "Let's Dance".
I just put the kids down for their naps and finally managed to grab some lunch for myself. Two fudge brownies and left over crab Rangoon. I'm a nutritionist's worst nightmare.
I'm so glad I had sister 10 years older than me in the 80s. I had a broad musical education in the Stones, the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel before moving into 80s arena rock. My brother is six years older than me and he handled the heavy metal section. My dad took care of classic country and bluegrass. I delved into alternative and punk on my own in middle school.
The only music my childhood lacked, sadly, was any decent classical music.
Okay, maybe I was being a wee bit dramatic, because there are definitely some disco songs (and singers) that I've done a 360 on, including some that just made me shudder at the time, like Barry White or The Pointer Sisters, or godhelpme, the BeeGees, though I don't actually own any music by the last.
I had an assistant manager at the bookstore who remembers going to see the Talking Heads when they were still playing at venues not much bigger than the corner bar in one of their first Midwest tours. She ended up chatting with Tina Weymouth after the show, and Tina convinced Connie to join the band in their usual barhopping that evening (she wanted a girl to hang out with).

Yeah, see, I can't go quite as far as the BeeGees, other than in a humorous context (see Bart Simpson recreating the opening to SNF, for example), but I can't tell you how horrified I was by some of my 360s. For example, those ELO songs I despised when they were on the radio back in the day? Sound pretty good when I come across them now, may god have mercy on my wretched soul.
Speaking of grammar:
"…for leases 99 years or less"
or
"…for leases 99 years or fewer"
Which one is correct?
