Yeah, I think first part of first season they were just sort of WB Standard. Things got better. Partly the writing. Partly the director(s) from Xfiles, and partly the actors finding their characters and buying into the mythos.

There's a lot less in the way of exposition dumping starting about midway through S1. Bloody Mary still suffers from the exposition dumps.
The best parts are parts with brother interaction, or this scene in the motel with Charlie, because they don't require a "Hey, isn't there some lore about?".
