I think it's always been about seeing "how it works" by looking at the brain. If he figures out Peter's dealio he won't have to open up the skull anymore. What we don't know about him is if he really gets off on murdering these people or if that's just a side effect of wanting the power.

Would you believe I was listening to a bit on BBC radio about that very thing on the way home from work tonight? Randomly obscure. But I don't remember the name of the syndrome or whatever.
