A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I believe they are referring to MIT Professor, Media & Popular Culture Guru, Henry Jenkins [link]

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Okay, reading that will have to go on my to-do list.

Thanks!

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Yeah, although everyone who thought the women in S1 were just fine (despite being boring, agenda-less, and interchangeable), is going to be all validated.

Insert snark about masculine authority figures here.

Ahem.

Possibly, I'm just twitchy about the reaction certain members of the fanbase had to anyone daring even question the gender politics of the show in S1.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Ple, I share your twitch. Although, having had a bit of drinky at work jus now (bigwig retiring) it may be spelled twicth.

Jenkins is fine, for what he is. The trick is realizing that he's no wiser nor more informed than anybody else in fandom. (Which took me years, as I argued with some of his more crackpot theories when I should have just been calling him a crackpot.)

"You can't put a price on the joy of not giving a shit." -Zenkitty

I was suspicious the moment he said that he sometimes hated Dean, partly because I am irrational on the subject of Dean, and partly because Dean maps more female (caretaker, peacemaker) than John and Sam Winchester.

Of course, in addition to what I wrote above, I will go on to say that not liking Dean doesn't mean I think you hate women, but not liking Dean and thinking the female characterization in season one was a-okay? It makes me look at you funny.

Art Crawl!!!

Do you think that criticism of female characters in season 1 is why they tried to create a more butt-kicking female in Jo? (And FAILED. Ava is SO MUCH BETTER.)

But Jo's cool! She's a reflection of both Sam and Dean! And stabbity stabbing in No Exit! And while somewhat bratty and sheltered, she's got agency and learns from her mistakes.

Ellen rocks my socks so much...she doesn't even have to do anything, just talk on the phone to the boys, and the world's a little righter.

Yeah, pretty much. They couldn't have missed the commentary, or the way everyone loved Deputy Kathleen more than any other woman in the season.

I think Jo has potential but is not there yet. I'd be easier about her if they hadn't stuck a big neon light on her that said "Love Interest" from the get-go. Let her grow and learn and become kickass, and I'm fine with that. And write her more interesting, please.

I love Ellen, though. More piss and vinegar, please.
