Jayne: Well... I don't like the idea of someone hearin' what I'm thinkin'. Inara: No one likes the idea of hearing what you're thinking.

brillig

I decided to do my drabble on my old, dear Smith Corona because I'm tired of reacting only with melancholy to the drabble subjects. I'm trying to think of how to keep a drabble about our new library, which was put into the old school buildings down the street, down to something around a hundred words. I don't count either, but go for what looks like the right number of lines.

It really doesn't matter. It's just an opinion. Don't worry about it. Not worth the hassle.

I just write. I don't count until I'm done; I don't start out with a key theme. It's a picture, or a memory, or a story, or just a moment gone, and then it's on paper. If it's too short, I leave it or expand it. If it's too long, I either prune it or expand it. It depends on the bit in question.

Do you think I should try to write 2500 words for a contest by the end of December?I'm a little tempted.(But I lose a lot)

Deb- I'm tweaking that essay based on the comments we'd discussed via email. In about fifteen minutes or so, might you have a second to reread and see if the revisions fix the problem?

The only prompt for that one is a single word. "Cut" as a theme. One of the judges writes for "The Wire"...we may have Sensibility Issues from the other end.Cause I'm just a dumb white girl from Glendale, apart from the brain damage thing. And another entry fee I can't really afford...it's not very big, but still. It's not like it's guaranteed, for sure. I'm about zero for five.

Erika, this is a cliche, but still true: if you never try again, you will always be zero for five. Keep taking that risk. You inspire me.

erika, what's the problem? Happy to beta. You just go write it, please.

Kristin, I'm just out of the shower, but you bet, send along.

Thank you...I know you didn't mean that in a Tiny Tim sense, right?Part of it is an honest desire to express things about life and part of it is a big jolt of fuck-you to all of those people who've wanted me to give up "that writing thing" in favor of, well, I'm not sure...(Maybe that's why I haven't. No better offers. Or maybe because it's the writing thing or the minimum-security thing. )At least these people won't hate that my characters swear sometimes. But I'm still disappointed about "Partners".ETA: What the problem always is, Deb. "What if I clutch? And my dreams crash and burn."(Whoa...two Homicide refs in two posts..there might be something in this obsession thing, after all.)
