Gunn: Well, how horrible is this thing? Lorne: I haven't read the Book of Revelations lately, but if I was searching for adjectives, I'd probably start there.

Erin, I'm working on my edit/critique and hope to have it for you this evening, but it may end up being tomorrow.

I'm aghast, Susan.

No cookie for you!

It really doesn't matter. It's just an opinion. Don't worry about it. Not worth the hassle.

Heh. Erin, that's weird - I'll resend part two, which, BTW, is far more "anticipatory reader" than "stern editor".

Cookies are being made, even as we speak....

If I only had a brain...

Does anybody have a favorite market report? My former Bible, The Gila Queen's Guide to Markets, hasn't put out a new issue since 2000. Market reports are really handy for pointing out new markets you mayn't have heard of. Right now, for instance, I have a short humorous cooking piece I want to place. I spent Sunday at Borders in the cooking section, and neither my favorite cooking mags nor any of the cooking mags I don't buy seems to have a place for humor. A friend suggested Sunset.

Oh, Betsy, you asking that reminded me of a questions I've been wanting to ask, but kept forgetting:

What are people's opinions on writing mags? Are they worth the money, and if so, which one(s) are the most useful? I'm thinking about asking my folks for a subscription for my birthday in August.

Thanks!

In my experience the writing magazines are too generalized to be very helpful. Writer's Digest, the big'un, has articles on marketing your nonfiction work next to blurbs on getting a fiction agent next to voluminous ads for their "indispensable" reference books.

However, if anyone knows of a good one I'd love to hear your recs.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Is Speculations still in business? They used to have good practical advice and market reporting.

If you can find something specifically targeted toward your genre, such as a newsletter for a [Fill-in-the-blank] Writer's Association, it's likely to be relevant and helpful.

At least, the one I've read so far from Romance Writers of America is.

Well, along those lines, Locus is a good magazine to get if you're writing in the science fiction, fantasy, or (to some extent) horror genre. They don't do articles specifically on writing, but they have news about publishing, e.g. editors switching houses, who's selling what to whom through what agent, magazines they've received, etc. They also do interviews with writers, usually two per issue, which I like because I'm always curious about other peoples' process. But, again, not a writing magazine per se.

Betsy, Sunset does have a lot of cooking articles in it, although I have yet to read any humor, and I've been a subscriber for about 3 years. It's worth a try, especially if you have any sort of a western/regional slant to the piece.

And... I'm back, if you have any comments. t hopeful
