I wonder if the people who decide who's fat are straight men

nope, it's other women. Just like women don't dress for men, they dress for other women.

Are Aussie sizes 8-12 smaller than US sizes 8-12, because I'm thinking maybe one of those women is a size 8, and the other two look like size 6.

Hard to tell I think. I was reading about the "zaftig" PR model that got Allison booted and Allison swore she was a size 10. She just didn't seem that much bigger than the others, who I assume are in the 2-4 range.

When standing next to the other models, she was bigger than the others, but not "zaftig" as Tim described her.

Oh, she clearly wasn't "zaftig" (which I think he was using as a euphemism for "bigger than the others") I just meant that she didn't seem that many sizes bigger. That (and seeing The Devil Wears Prada ) made me wonder if I had any idea what each size really looks like.

I thought about clicking on links to pictures of models, but decided thinking about the hotness of Vortex would be more rewarding.

hip deep in pie

I read an article somewhere that those Austrailian size 8-12s were the equivalent of US sizes 4-8.

Right. And of course, there's the fact that different designers cut differently, so that the exact same body may be a 6 in one, but an 8 in another.

I remember that I was watching an episode of some 80's sitcom (I think it was The Nanny, if anyone cares), and they were in a modeling agency. One woman said to another "oh, you're a perfect size 6, you'll get a ton of work". SIX. I repeat SIX. and what's the average model now, a 0? double 0 ?

In Pretty Woman JR is a size 6.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Allison swore she was a size 10

Then Allison has never seen a size 10 person. Her model had wider hips and shoulders than your average model, but still no visible fat or muscle on either.

And of course, there's the fact that different designers cut differently, so that the exact same body may be a 6 in one, but an 8 in another.

This is true too -- if you're not making ready-to-wear, do size numbers have any relevance at all? It shouldn't matter what jean size she wears if her measurements are right on the table in front of you.
