SLJ is a big geek, isn't he?

The last interview I saw him in, he was talking about riding the subway. A guy was looking at him, wondering, then finally asked if he was SLJ. SLJ replies, "Naaaaah. He wouldn't be riding the subway."

This may have been on TDS as well.

I spent 2 1/2 hours in a bookstore trying to choose books for a 9 yr old boy. He's at that point where it's hard to find something that is challenging enough, but not too mature.

I managed to tweak my neck at some point this morning and by the time I got home half my back and my shoulder were one giant knot. Driving is fun when you can't turn your head very well.

What did you pick? My suggestions would be How to Eat Fried Worms, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, My Side of the Mountain or Moccasin Trail.

I got Holes, by Louis Sachar and Truckers, by Terry Pratchett.

How'd I do? Part of the challenge is that this kid reads a lot, so it's hard to anticipate what will be new to him.

Yay! I was hoping to find one of the Great Brain books but I don't even remember who the author is.

Holes is a good book.

Good things about today:

Root beer float made with gelato, drank in 85 degree weather outside on the Plaza

Turning off the AC and opening the windows!

Seeing some of my students again at Parent-Student Orientation night

It's wierd because up to this age I've mostly given books that I've read. I've heard great things about Holes, but I haven't had any inclination to pick it up for myself.
