Right, there comes a point where you have to either move on, or just buy yourself a Klingon costume and go with it.

We're all getting played with, babe. -Weird Barbie

New thread!

This is also the first time I am completely caught up in a Natter thread in months. Yes I know there aren't even 50 posts yet. Hush.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Can't believe all the Job haters in the hizzouse. Jesse, I thought you were a PK?

I was a PK. Still creeped out by the Job story, sorry. Not that I've read it in years.

NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T WATCH COLBERT: Every week, he profiles a Congressional district and interviews its Rep. Every week, he says this week he's doing "[State's] [#] District -- The fightin' [#]!!" Except, of course, last week, when he did DC, and could only say "The Fightin' District!"

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Of course, I post all this in the full knowledge that probably everyone on earth, with the possible exceptions of Alan Moore and maybe victor, will think I'm on the crackiest crack that ever was cracked.

I cannot believe my wife would leave me off this list with Alan Moore and Victor when I pimped the damn book to her in the first place and have written on more than one occasion about the "Evey" section of the book. Fie.

You can't leave me to my own devices; my devices are Nap and Eat. -Zenkitty

Also, God is not supposed to be understood to be an asshole in the OT - that's a fairly contemporary reading.

It was considered more on the level of a fratboy prank back then?

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

It was considered more on the level of a fratboy prank back then?

Aw, Sean, don't make me repost my cracky V theory again, please?

Fie.

Sorry, dearest. I know well of your Evey love; I just didn't know which side of the crack line you'd fall on WRT God/Abraham=V/Evey.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

that's not the best reading of Job.

Define "best." (And no, "most likely to make the reader want to worship God by the end of the book" doesn't count.)

move out and draw fire

The Stoats and the Redshirts should be friends.

Somebody here reads Dork Tower

It was considered more on the level of a fratboy prank back then?

Life was just that fucking hard back then. The Asshole!God interpretation is also fairly American, or maybe First World.

::really leaving now::

Not Hec, but I think by "best" he means "most in line with what, from what little historical and cultural context we can gather, the author(s) likely intended in writing it."

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

In non-God news (unless you're like me, and believe that candy is a gift from the deity(ies)), I'm sucking on a piece of root beer barrel hard candy, AIFG! I'd forgotten how good these are, and am very glad that the receptionist at my office has expanded her bowl of mints to include these.

Best = Extracting the intended meaning in its metaphor instead of viewing it as a narrative where God is a character.
