I've been to Mall of America, once, but that's not really Minneapolis.
One of the MN state employees booked me into a hotel right across the street from the MoA, assuming that would be attractive to me. Not at all, really. BUT, it meant handy restaurants, so I went.
Huge disappointment. A huge mall where there are 4 Marshall's and 4 Gaps is not vast, it's redundant.

Madison was $200ish to fly to either NW or Delta.
Minneapolis is a NW hub, which means that more people would have direct flights.
For some odd reason my search results for Minneapolis are much more expensive. Doesn't make sense to me.
Depends where you're flying from, I suppose. Minneapolis is a bit cheaper for me.

For the random weekend I chose from DC, Madison was cheaper.
Oh, that's true too, Sparky. Hadn't thought of that. I chose a random weekend as well.
This is a neat site for comparisons. I don't know how well they hold up in reality though.

Go Madison! Choose Madison!
Madison is very pretty - especially in the summer. There are, like, lakes all over the place.
