Milwaukee's cheaper, but less easy to find easy transport from the airport back to Madison. Chicago O'Hare has the virtue of also being the main bus depot. Van Galder runs between Madison and Chicago every 1-1 1/2 hours starting at 6:30 am until 10:30 pm. $24 one-way.

Plan what to do, what to wear (you can never go wrong with a corset), and get ready for the next BuffistaCon: Madison, WI from June 20-22 2008! Official website.
There's also a bus service running from O'Hare to Madison. At least, there used to be back in the '80s, and I can't think of any reason it would have been canceled.
Is there a rail line that goes to Madison? When I lived in Chicago commuter rail only went as far as Kenosha.
No, there isn't. They've been talking about bringing light rail into Madison, but I think that's kinda stalled, forever.
Although, I think there's passenger service to Columbus, which is around 30 miles out from Madison.
...and SailAweigh even had the details....
FYI, Wiscon is held in Madison over Memorial Day weekend.
Let's not try to double up on a con weekend.
Were there any Chicago-istas interested in looking into other prospective places there?
I wish I could say I would, but there is no way I'll have time to do information gathering or prep work. Depending on the weekend I might be able to help with the actual events but that's the best I can realistically offer.

Why? Because of too many people? Wiscon is capped at 1000 registrants. Unless we're in the same hotel I don't see the issue.
I don't think it matters, because historically Mem Day weekend isn't workable for a lot of us anyway.

I'm all in favor of doing it the same weekend as the con. It would be one more possible thing to do, an interesting thing!
I'll be out of luck if we pick Memorial Day weekend—my cousin's getting married in New Orleans that Sunday.
