Only sucky part is that I have a friend there (that's not sucky in and of itself) and I'd be expected to at least hang with her a little (hanging with her is also not suck, but I feel like Linz monopolized a lot of my time so I got less buffistas).

St. Louis might be another good possibility, and I can pimp an excellent boutique bed & breakfast in Fort Worth that would be perfect for our group to take over if we wouldn't have more than its capacity attending. (I think it has about 10 separate guest rooms, though some of them are suites that can sleep more than 2 people. Perfect for a New Orleans-sized gathering, dozens left out on the steets for a Washington-sized one.)
