(I might also recommend my work neighborhood, the inner Sunset -- Irving Street btwn 6th and 12th Ave -- not touristy, but fun-shoppy, with a comic book store, a magic store, goofy clothing and tchotchke shops, a fabulous beauty supply store, and excellent food of just about every ethnic variety but Russian).
