The Minearverse 5: Closer to the Earth, Further from the Ax
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
So, what is the situation with writers like John Oliver?
Last night on the Daily Show, he did a short bit with Jon Stewart where he said that, while he is a member of the WGA, his work visa prohibits him from striking (with the penalty being deportation). What a bind!
Kristen, are you sure that it is just 2 days?
HA! I thought it was two days but maybe it was more.
I haven't watched it yet but Milch is, for me, sometimes hard to follow when he speaks about writing. When he's telling stories, he's just hilarious and profane.
ETA: Last night was the first time I'd heard about the John Oliver situation but Vortex's explanation makes sense.

I suspect that his work visa requires him to be employed, so if Jon made him a production assistant or something he'd be okay. He can't write, but he's employed.
He was participating in a clearly scripted bit.

but if he didn't write it, he's fine.
Well, if Stewart wrote it, then wouldn't Stewart get in trouble instead? I'm thinking of what Wolfram quoted in this post.

the issue that we were discussing wasn't who wrote the bit, but about Oliver's work visa. He may not work as a writer because of his WGA membership, but he he may be able to work in another capacity.
Maybe Oliver wrote his part of that bit.
