Seems like a different (and much more compelling) game that way, given the stakes involved.
Yeah, but then you have the whole issue of why don't the sponsors just send somebody to shoot and run over the other compeitors. Although maybe they will.
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

I hope that the finish of the race is actually up in the air rather than fixed the way wrestling is.
There's not some Platonic ideal of race whose rules they'd be breaking.
Well, not Platonic, but if you're mapping from horse racing, where you bet on particular horses based on their talents and skills and do not interfere during the race itself, it's not unreasonable to intuitively see the Race in the same way. Since the sponsors clearly are interfering, you have to assume it's A) cheating or B) part of the rules or C) both.
And, you know, less rigged than professional wrestling, or people wouldn't be trying to kill each other over it. [xposty]
I also think the sponsors are probably not political or industry leaders -- there's a line in Brief Lives about "people so rich their names never show up on any Ten Richest People In The World lists."
I'm guessing the insider stakes are a lot bigger (and less straightforward).
Or just a dollar.
Pay up, Mortimer. I've won the bet.

Yes, well, maybe that's one of the rules.
But think about what happened to Blondie's parents. I kind of thought they were killed not by other racers necessarily, but by the sponsors or the sponsors' lackeys.
Yeah, but then you have the whole issue of why don't the sponsors just send somebody to shoot and run over the other compeitors.
Well, it looks like that did happen to Corinna's parents. Unless another rule is that they were CLOSE ENOUGH to "win" for the sake of the Race, but they couldn't actually cross because killing them is more fun or something.
Corinna claims the Race has no rules, but you can't be disqualified if there are no rules.
I think Toph should be in the Race.

I wasn't sure if they were actually killed or whether they wrecked in sight of the finish line.
I assumed the other car in that scene was a competitor, not a race official or sponsor. Huh.
